Common Red Flags For NDD
Please note that these “red flags” below are just that – “red flags”. The only way to know for sure if your child has retained primitive reflexes and underdeveloped or absent postural reflexes is through a comprehensive assessment.
- Immature Behavior
- Lacks understanding of social cues
- Hypersensitivity to sound, touch, light
- Aggressive / defiant behavior
- Stimulus bound
- Visual Perception Problems
- Auditory Confusion
- Poor Posture
- Motion Sickness
- Poor Adaptability (dislike of change)
- Lack of body awareness (unable to recognize body-space)
- Free floating anxiety
- Weak ego / low self esteem
- Compromised immune functioning
- Inability to respond appropriately to situation
- “Clumsy Child” (difficulty judging space, distance & depth)
- Fist grip (poor pincer grip/fine finger movements).
- Child unable to support self with open palms
- Continued connection between hand & mouth which affects speech and articulation (child makes movement with mouth while writing or drawing)
- Poor standing / walking (“toe walking”)
- Eye movement difficulties
- Poor sequencing skills
- Poor organizational skills
- Skipped crawling / creeping stages
- Floppy / stiff child
- Poor hand – eye coordination
- Poor handwriting / difficulty writing
- Poor eye tracking / difficulty reading
- Dyslexic tendencies
- Homolateral movements
- Mixed laterality
- Difficulty crossing midline from one side of the body to the other
- Fist grip (poor pincer grip/fine finger movements).
- Poor attention / concentration.
- Poor Posture (tendency to slump when sitting).
- Hypertonia (stiff, rigid, muscle tone)
- Hypotonia (low muscle tone)
- Tendency to sit in ‘w’ leg position
- Difficulty copying from board to desk
- Difficulty with vertical tracking (problems aligning columns in math)
- Unable to swim (upper/lower body integration problems)
- Difficulty applying known concepts (problem solving)
- Difficulty with multi-processing
- Difficulty coping with large volumes of information
